About “Giulietta e Romeo”

The opera “Giulietta e Romeo”(2 Acts) composed by Nicola Vaccaj(1790-1848).

Speaking of the Italian opera based on the tragic love of Romeo and Juliet, “I Capuleti e i Montecchi” by V.Bellini (1801-1835) in 1830 is famous.

However, these two operas have a deep connection.
The script of “Giulietta e Romeo” which achieved great success at Milano in 1825 was written by Felice Romani. On the other hand, “I Capuleti e i Montecchi” is based on the same script and revised by Romani himself.

Bellini himself revised Vaccaj’s work. Furthermore, Maria Malibran(1808-1836) forced Bellini to replace Capuleti family’s tomb scene to Vaccaj’s work which included a satisfying aria for Romeo. 7 years after that, Vaccaj’s opera has been performed as a part of Bellini’s work. At the present time, both operas are performed in the original version.
